INEC Resident Electoral Commission of Lagos State, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje has urged political party leaders and candidates to warn their followers to play politics by the rules and imbibe the spirit of politics without bitterness.
He said this at the enlarged stakeholders forum held on 9th of February, 2023 at Media Centre, INEC State Office, Sabo-Yaba, Lagos.
According to him, INEC is determined to “conduct very good elections into the various offices during the 2023 General Election” and the preparations that have been put in place include: Testing of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS); Issuance of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs); Mock accreditation in selected Polling Units (PUs) across the State with the use of BVAS; Movement of non-sensitive materials like mats, cubicles, ballot boxes, apron vests among others to the LGA offices; Sourcing and screening of Ad-hoc staff from NYSC, Tertiary Institutions, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, amongst others.
“Ongoing activities include: Printing of Register of Voters; Configuration of BVAS; Voter sensitization
Monitoring of political parties campaigns; Stakeholders engagements amongst others”, Agbaje stated further.
He noted the few things voters need to know for the General Election to be Knowing the polling date, time and place; Having the Voter’s Card; Secret Voting process; Marking the ballot box correctly; No voting by proxy allowed; Use of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) amongst others.
“It is pertinent to note that the worst challenge facing the electoral process currently is the do-or-die attitude of political parties’ leaders which involve the use of different unlawful means to undermine the electoral process. The way desperate politicians used thugs to either disrupt elections or intimidate election officials in some polling units, RACs and Collation Centres during the last General Election assumed a very worrisome dimension and must not be allowed to happen again in Lagos State. The consequences of not getting this election right are too grief and should not even be contemplated”, Agbaje Advised.
