A year-old toddler in Cross River State was severely injured after being raped by a local man, Nsikak Akpan. The community’s youth not only apprehended the perpetrator but also rejected a substantial bribe he offered to escape justice.
On Tuesday, September 10th, 2024, a terrible incident occurred in the Betem Community of Baise Local Government. Nsikak Akpan, a resident of the area who was a oil palm dealer, sexually assaulted a one-year-and-seven-month old child when playing with his seven-year old son in his own house. The young victim was rushed to a nearby cottage hospital, where medical staff confirmed ejaculated sperm on her and provided immediate treatment.
Akpan attempted to flee the scene but was pursued and apprehended by local youths. When confronted, he confessed to the crime and offered a significant bribe to be released. However, the youth refused the bribe and alerted the police.
Rev. Thanksgod Arong, Vice President of the Betem Youth Council and a member of the traditional rulers council, confirmed the incident and he and some people from the community went to the station Mr Nsikak was taken. He expressed concerns that Akpan might attempt to bribe the police as well because he did that when he was apprehended but the youths, and vowed to follow the case closely.
The perpetrator, Nsikak Akpan, has been transferred to the Cross River State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. The victim’s mother, Mrs. Sarah Ohameso, is accompanying her child during the legal process.
